FRP rebar in Construction Requirements

For years now, FRP rebar has been applied in several types of concrete structures but with little global recognition. For manufacturers and distributors of FRP products, this meant having to go above and beyond to explain the value of using FRP bars in the construction industry. With the growing demand for this more sustainable alternative, several resources and associations have made it their priority to review FRP applications and incorporate them in codes for construction requirements. Here’s a few examples.

The Masonry Society

The Masonry Society has included, for the first time, FRP rebar as part of their most recently published code, the TMS 402/602 Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures. This is a notable development for the FRP industry as it recognizes the benefits of using this more sustainable alternative to steel as a main building material in concrete structures. The American Concrete Institute

One of the main sponsors of the Masonry Society is the ACI (American Concrete Institute) who has also introduced a new code referencing the use of FRP bar in Construction Projects. In fact, the ACI CODE-440.11-22: Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete Reinforced with Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) Bars outlines in detail the different conditions to apply FRP bars. This is also a huge game changer in the FRP industry as it is an official documentation that cover several concepts including: design and construction for strength, serviceability, and durability; load combinations, load factors, and strength reduction factors; structural analysis methods; deflection limits; development and splicing of reinforcement; construction document information; field inspection and testing; and methods to evaluate the strength of existing structures. While we have always believed in the advantages of using this innovative building material in your concrete projects, it is incredibly rewarding to see the growing appreciation and recognition for FRP bars. As FRP ambassadors, we are proud to manufacture and distribute these materials, anywhere in the world, to help promote more durable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective construction projects.
